Frequently Asked Questions

(
Q) Should I wrap my horse's legs or apply shipping boots for the trip?

(A) We do not recommend this. What we have found with the horses during
transport is that the horses that are not used to wraps or boots tend to try to
remove them and find them irritating, causing a worse reaction than if they didn't
wear them at all.  The horses that are used to them, of course, do fine. Be careful
with how tightly you wrap.  If your horse finds them irritating, we will remove the
wraps or boots.

(Q) How can I prepare my horse for his trip?

(A) There are many things YOU can do to make your horses trip more
comfortable:

1. NO rich grain or feed for 2-3 days prior to shipment...This is not being mean,
it's being safe.

2. Let us know of any problems or issues up front, it is much easier on us AND
your horse if there are no surprises along the way.

3. Build up your horse's system. Mix powdered electrolytes (found at most feed
stores) in with your horse's water for a couple of days prior to shipment,
especially if he/ she is in for a long trip, or going to an area with a different
climate.

4.  If your horse is a hard loader, load & unload your each day, see how he reacts.
This will help us both  while loading & unloading in our trailers.

(Q) Is my horse insured while in the care of Zeigler Horse Transport?

(A) No we do not carry mortality insurance on the horses traveling in our trailer.
Any coverage  is the responsibility of the owner.

If you would like to have your horse insured please call Georgia Walker @
1-800-385-2423

(Q) Which states are brand inspection states?

(A)  CO, ID, MT, NV, ND,  UT, WA, and WY.

MT also requires you to get a travel permit #.  Your vet should be able to attain
this for you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Q)  How long are coggins tests good for and how long does it take to get the
results back?

(A)  An Equine Infectious Anemia Report, aka, coggins is necessary for each
horse traveling in our trailer, however, babies not yet weaned from their mothers
do not require a coggins. Generally they are good for 6 months to a year
depending upon the state.  This can be answered by your vet.  Coggins take
anywhere from 2 days to 7 days to get the results back from the lab.  If your are
in a real bind for time, in a lot of places, your vet can put a 24 hr. rush on a test.

(Q) How long are health certificates good for?

(A) 30 days from the time they were issued

(Q) Will Zeigler Livestock take my horse's tack?

(A) Yes. If you are sending tack, PLEASE make sure all items are boxed in a
CLEAN box (preferably a plastic Rubber maid tub) and are clearly labeled with
your name, phone number, and your horse's name. Boxes shipped with us will
be kept in our trailer's neck or in the back of the trucks.  The driver has the right
to decide to take the boxes or not.
***There will be a charge for the tack **
------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Q)How often do you stop to rest the horses?

We are a legal transport company. We follow the 11 hour drive time rule and stop
every 3-4 hours to refuel and check on horses. This usually takes about an hour.
This all means that transport takes a little longer but your horse is safe and with
someone that is legal. We stop for 6- 8 hrs every night.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Q) Do you unload the horses at night ?

(A)  No we do not unload the horses at night due to safety & liability reasons.
Our stalls in our trailers are large enough that the horses are comfortable in
them . The horses do get unloaded once a day during the trip so we can get
the trailer cleaned out.  Your horse has lots of room in our custom built trailers
with 4' x 8' slants
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Q) Do you tie the horse's heads?

(A) The horses are left loose to prevent shipping fever. It is important to let them
lower their heads to blow out their airways during the haul. Horses have water
and hay in front of them at all times.
Horses can be tied during the entire trip per the shipper's request.
